  • I am looking for Thor Alexander. I am starting my Masters Thesis and wanted to exchange some ideas about machine learning in games.

In particular I am interested in "online learning" to improve NPC behavior, and possibly thwart scripted bots.

Most enemies in games, can be defeated using a simple tactic repeatedly. Even the most terrible human opponent would notice this alter their behavior to compensate. I suggest using machine learning to continually alter NPC behavior would create a more rich and realistic game world. I think a key to effective learning is to have a species learn as opposed to individual members.

Online MMO games would receive the most benefit to these techniques. The player base is large, giving ample data. And the adaptive behavior would require constant tweaking to scripted bots in order to keep them effective.

  • Hi Thor,

I've read your book and I really enjoy it.

I'm a game programmer and I'm addicted now with MMORPGs.

I would really appreciate if we can talk in a more private way.
I need your opinion about one game in particular and it design.

If you don't have the time or you're not interested I'll understand.

Many thanks in advance and thank you for reading my comment,
